Elders Equine will be running our monthly gastroscopy clinic for the day. We are offering video examination of your horse's stomach to identify and diagnose gastric or stomach ulcers. This procedure is performed on your sedated horse with a extra long video endoscope. The procedure takes about 30-40 minutes and we are looking to determine whether gastric ulcers may be causing your horse's discomfort. Some of the external... signs of ulcers are teeth grinding, excessive yawning, 'girthy or cinchy' - painful response to tightening the girth/cinch, biting at flanks and bucking in transitions (trot-canter typically). OR if you suspect or are treating your horse currently for ulcers but have not confirmed whether they are present or want to determine if they are gone, then this is the procedure you will need to have done. A reduced procedure cost is offered during our gastroscopy clinic days each month.
If you would like to book your horse for a gastroscopy to identify gastric ulcers or would like more information on gastric ulcers and their diagnosis, please give us a call and we will be happy to help.
INFORMATION FOR REFERRING VETERINARIANS:
We are offering a monthly gastroscopy clinic day and would like to make all our referring vets aware of the details of the day. It will be held monthly at our hospital.
The procedure requires the horses be booked in advance and the clients will be instructed to hold the horses off feed for 24 hours prior to having the procedure performed. All procedures are performed under standing sedation with a 3 meter videoendoscope with both insufflation and gas egress to maximize effectiveness of the study as well as safety. The procedure takes about 30-45 minutes and examines the stomach, pylorus and esophagus for signs of erosions or ulcers as well as parasites or any other abnormalities (masses, granulomas etc.)
The cost is reduced for these specific days of the month.
Gastroscopy cases can be scheduled anytime during the month if needed at the regular price. Contact us if you have a client that wishes to have the procedure done outside of the clinic day.
Pending the findings, the horse may be prescribed gastrogard/omeprazole. We give the client to option of purchasing at the time of the exam or coming back to your practice to begin treatment as prescribed. As many of these horses will require ongoing ulcer protection/prevention in the future, all future prescriptions will most likely be filled through your practices I would anticipate.
This clinic will be held monthly and we will post on our website and Facebook page regarding the exact dates each month. We can also provide you with updates on the dates, if interested – just let me know.
Upper airway videoendoscopy is also available on a separate day for clients that have an upper or lower airway issues that you would like to have examined and reported back to you (for those that do not have airway endoscopy capabilities).
Thank you for the support and we look forward to helping you and your clients
